AutoLocate Used Car Locator
http://www.ibm.autolocate.co.uk/usedcar/?VehicleType=CAR

To get started select if you want to search by total price (vehicle price) or monthly payment price (monthly budget).

There are lots of search criteria to choose from and there are plenty of vehicles in this site's database (just over 25,200 at the time of this review). Manipulation of the results leaves something to be desired and information on individual vehicles is skimpy. Too much personal info is required to get more details.

Pros:
As mentioned above there are plenty of vehicles in the database and the search criteria are quite extensive and have the all-important search by distance from your postcode option. A nice feature is that you can compare the used vehicle you have chosen with another used vehicle in the database.

Cons:
Results can be sorted by price or distance only - it would be helpful to have the ability to sort by mileage as well. Too few of the vehicles have pictures and details on individual vehicles are very minimal. If you want more information you'll have to supply too much personal information on a non-secure form.

How to:

  • Search for a used vehicle
To get started select if you want to search by total price or monthly payment price. Then select your search criteria and just follow the on-screen instructions.

  • Request more information from seller/dealer
Once you've got a list of vehicles displayed (see above) click on the name of the vehicle to see the details page. Once on the details page look for a 'Please enquire for details' link to get more info.

autoblue.co.uk : The online marketplace for selling and buying new and used vehicles
http://www.autoblue.co.uk/

This new site has lots of potential. Search for a used vehicle easily and quickly. Well designed and thought out for efficient navigation. I'm impressed! I particularly like the List by Make page, which summarizes the number of vehicles available and their price range.

Pros:
Wow! Lots of search options to really narrow down the results. You can select a search range for price, engine power, registration year, and mileage. Choose a colour and even extras like onboard television. If you enter your Postcode, you can select a search radius as well. Earlier we had criticized the lack of listings but now that seems to have been remedied although it is still far behind AutoLocate (for example a search of all Fords on AutoLocate produced a list of 2,100 vehicles while autoblue has only 75).

Cons:
When contacting sellers, your name and email address are entered on a non-secure form. Details on individual vehicles could be more extensive.

How to:

  • Search for a used vehicle
Find your way to the Car Search page by either link in the top left quadrant of the main page. Then select your search criteria from the myriad of options and click the Search button in the bottom righthand corner of the page. You can sort the results by simply clicking on one of seven options on the list page. You can keep adding options to further refine your results by clicking on the Change Search link.

  • Request more information from seller/dealer
Once you've got a list of vehicles displayed (see above) click on the name of the vehicle, its price or picture or the View Details link to see the details page. Once on the details page, filll out a simple form.

Used Cars UK: Nearly New Cars UK
http://www.allapprovedcars.com/UsedCarSearch.aspx

Tons of cars in this database and fairly good search options provided. Results manipulation could be better and details on individual vehicles are very minimal. There doesn't seem to be a way to get more information other than by telephone.

Pros:
There are over 80,000 vehicles in the database and the search tool is quite good and does sort of provide a postcode distance search. Once you have a list of results they can be re-sorted by distance from you, model, price and age. There are a couple of helpful extras like being able to see other vehicles for sale at the dealership where you've found a suitable car and the ability to save cars you've looked at to a virtual garage. There's also an alerting service that will allow you to put in your vehicle requirements and alert you when a vehicle similar to this is added to the database.

Cons:
Although there is the ability to enter your postcode and thereby see cars nearest to you there is no indication given in the results as to where the vehicles are located in relation to the postcode you entered. Details on individual vehicles are very skimpy and it is unfortunate that it seems the only way to contact the seller is by telephone or going to the dealer's website and searching for an email address. No contact email form is provided.

How to:

  • Search for a used vehicle
Indicate your search criteria in the Used Car Search box in the upper left hand area of the page and click on the 'go' button.

  • Request more information from seller/dealer
Once you've got a list of vehicles displayed (see above) click on the name of the vehicle (in orange text) to see the details page. Call the seller at the phone number listed on the details page or go to the Dealer Website (see link in the Dealer Details box on the right hand side of the page) and find an email address.

car source uk - used cars - mercedes, bmw, range rover, ferrari, porsche, volkswagen, vw, audi
http://www.carsource.co.uk/

This site with plenty of vehicles (148,000) is handicapped by a lacklustre search tool and overall sluggishness. Unfortunately the results are displayed in a very cumbersome format with important information lacking and with no manipulation possible. The details page is visually busy and confusing and very slow to load. Contacting the dealership seems to be by telephone or by going to the dealer's website and searching for an email address or by using an email form on some listings.

Pros:
As mentioned above there are plenty of vehicles in the database and the search criteria are okay but with a couple of major deficiencies outlined below.

Cons:
Although you put in your postcode and indicate whether to search locally, regionally or nationally there is no indication in the results as to where vehicles are located and/or their distance from your postcode. Also you can not search within a price range without specifying a manufacturer. The results display format is horribly cumbersome with only 10 ads per page, no pictures shown and no way to re-sort results. You also aren't shown how many results you've been returned. The individual detail pages are not standardized (some go through to other sites) and it can be confusing trying to figure out how to get more information. If you are supplied with a 'Further Information Request' button you'll get to supply too much personal information on a non-secure form.

How to:

  • Search for a used vehicle
Input your general search criteria (manufacturer, postcode and proximity) and click on the Search now button. Note that although there is a field for your E-mail address you do not NEED to supply it. On the next page specify more search details.

  • Request more information from seller/dealer
Once you've got a list of vehicles displayed (see above) click on the name of the vehicle to see the details page. You may be shown a 'Request further information' button or you may be redirected to a dealer's website in which case you'll need to search for a way to get further information about the vehicle you're interested in.

Buy and sell all types of vehicles on eBay Motors
http://motors.ebay.co.uk/

Not a bad number of cars on eBay Motors (about 68,000 although it is hard to tell if this is just cars or includes parts as well) but, like so many sites, this one is handicapped by poor search capability. Results can not really be manipulated in too many useful ways and because details on vehicles are up to the seller there is great variation on the amount of information provided. You decide how much personal information to divulge to the seller.

Pros:
Plenty of vehicles in the database and as well as a basic search tool you can now search by distance from postcode. Results can also now be re-sorted by distance from your postcode. Wide variety of how much information is supplied on individual vehicles. Amount of information divulged to the seller is up to you.

Cons:
It would be nice to be able to sort on other characteristics than price (for instance mileage or age). Details on individual vehicles vary widely.

How to:

  • Search for a used vehicle
Use the basic Car Finder in the middle of the page, search by make in the left hand column or use the advanced search (link in the top right hand corner of the page). The advanced search will allow you to specify your postcode and distance to search from it.

  • Request more information from seller/dealer
Once you've got a list of vehicles displayed (see above) click on the vehicle name link to see more information and pictures. Click on the 'Ask seller a question' link (right hand column) for more information.

Used Cars AutoNow Classifieds UK
http://www.autonow.co.uk/dbfiles/s2.asp

Another site with lots of vehicles (53,000) but a poor search tool. Data can't be manipulated and details on individual vehicles are minimal. To get more information on a vehicle you'll have to use the telephone.

Pros:
Lots of cars in the database and a simple interface - unfortunately that's about all I can find to say positive about this site.

Cons:
There is no option to search by postcode or distance from it. Results are displayed in a cumbersome format and you are not shown where the vehicle is located on the results screen (you have to click on the individual vehicle). Details on individual vehicles are skimpy and how you contact the seller will depend on whether you remain on the AutoNow site (in which case you'll probably only be able to contact the seller by telephone) or are sent off to another site (where you may have more options - or not).

How to:

  • Search for a used vehicle
Specify your make (or leave on All if you'd like to search by price range) and click on the GO button. On the next page select model, price range, year and area and click on the GO button again.

  • Request more information from seller/dealer
Once you've got a list of vehicles displayed (see above) click on the arrow to the left of the word View to see details on the vehicle. As mentioned above, if you remain on the AutoNow site you'll probably only be able to contact the seller by telephone - if you are redirected to another site you may have other contact options.

Fish4 Cars: Used Car Search UK
http://www.fish4.co.uk/iad/cars/advanced/

A good number of vehicles in this database and a fairly good search tool. Unfortunately the results display format is cumbersome and there is no manipulation of the results available. Too much personal info is required to get more details.

Pros:
Lots of vehicles in the database and an adequate search tool with the all important 'search by distance from postcode' feature available. However, that's about the extent of good things I have to say.

Cons:
Although you have the 'search by distance from postcode' feature there is no way to sort by distance from your postcode nor is the distance from your postcode of individual listings displayed. Duh! The results display format is cumbersome and can not be re-sorted in any way. Details on individual vehicles are skimpy and you must submit too much personal information on a non-secure form to get more information.

How to:

  • Search for a used vehicle
Choose your search criteria and click on the search button at the bottom of the page.

  • Request more information from seller/dealer
Once you've got a list of vehicles displayed (see above) click on the 'More details' link to see the vehicle details page. Depending on whether the car is being privately sold or is on a dealer's lot there will be different options for getting more info. If privately sold look for a phone number and/or email address in the Description box - if it is at a dealer's lot then there should be a 'Contact dealer' button.

the new way to buy new and used cars on the internet
http://www.tins.co.uk/ui2004/frameset.asp?page=4&phone=used

Another site with a good number of cars (just over 15,100) that is hampered by a poor search tool. The results can be manipulated fairly well but details on individual vehicles are skimpy. Too much personal info is required to get more details.

Pros:
There are a fair number of vehicles in the database and I like the way the results are displayed (it is compact and easy to scan quickly). Results can be re-sorted by vehicle description, colour, year, mileage and price. You can contact the seller by an email form (no need to rely on the telephone).

Cons:
There is no ability to search by distance from your postcode and location information is not shown in the results display. You have to type in the model you are looking for (most places allow you to choose from a pull down list). Details on individual vehicles are minimal and to get more information you have to supply way too much information on a non-secure form.

How to:

  • Search for a used vehicle
Choose your search criteria and click on the Search button.

  • Request more information from seller/dealer
Once you've got a list of vehicles displayed (see above) click on the Vehicle Description to see the details page. Click on the Enquire about this vehicle button in the lower right hand area of the page or call the telephone number given.

Used cars for sale UK Used Car Selling
http://www.wheretobuycarsfrom.com/

This site is geared more toward listing your used car for sale, as opposed to assisting you in buying used vehicles. That said, it does seem to have lots of cars in its database, although the exact number is hard to tell and most of them seem to be from dealers.

Pros:
Lots of information for vehicle buyers such as Consumer Rights, Buyers FAQ and Car Buying Advice. The only personal data you have to enter to search for vehicles is your postcode. Text message alerts when the car you're looking for becomes available is a nice bonus.

Cons:
The search criteria need to be all filled in; it would be nice if they were loaded with default values that you could change to narrow your search. For instance, you must select a Minimum Price; it would be nice if the default value was 1,000 quid. Same for Make, Model, Maximum Price and Distance from You. There doesn't appear to be anyway to sort the list page.

How to:

  • Search for a used vehicle
Click on the Used Cars 4 Sale link in the row of links across the top of the main page (or choose a make and model in the two drop down boxes on the right hand top area of the main page). Fill in all six search criteria and click on the Search button. Fields are available for Make, Model, Minimum Price, Maximum Price, Distance from You and Your Postcode. All matches are returned on one page, sorted by price, so be as specific as possible to shorten your list. It seems better to redo your search than to refine it on the list page.

  • Request more information from seller/dealer
Once you've got a list of vehicles displayed (see above) click on the name of the vehicle, its picture or the name of the dealer for a popup page with a larger picture and vehicle specifications. To follow up, click on the link to the dealer's website or ring the seller or register with the site (which will allow you to email the seller using the sites messaging system).

Classic Driver - CARS FOR SALE
http://www.classicdriver.de/uk/find/4100.asp?action=advanced%5Fsearch

At just over 6,500 cars in the database this is a modestly sized site but if you are looking for a classic vehicle it may be of use. The search tool is okay and data can be manipulated although not extensively. Details on individual vehicles could be greater and you don't have to supply too much personal information to get more information on a vehicle you are interested in.

Pros:
The search allows you to specify a number of useful criteria and location at the country level (i.e. Germany, France). The results are presented in a nicely formatted list and can be re-sorted by model, year, price and dealer. You only need to supply your last name, phone number, country and email to obtain more information on a vehicle. It is a nice feature that you can set the pricing to display in the currency most useful to you.

Cons:
It is perhaps a bit much to ask but it would be helpful if you could do a distance from your postcode search but that might be a very complex task across countries. It would be nice to be shown a little more information about a vehicle's location rather than just the country it is in. Details on individual vehicles are not that elaborate but I expect most people looking for vehicles of this cost and type expect to do a lot of communcation with the seller to establish this information.

How to:

  • Search for a used vehicle
Choose your search criteria and click on the 'show' button. You'll see how many vehicles there are from that manufacturer and how many of each model. Select which models you'd like to see and click 'show' again.

  • Request more information from seller/dealer
Once you've got a list of vehicles displayed (see above) click on the manufacturer/model link. To get more information input your name and email in to the contact the seller form or look for a phone number and/or email link on the details page.

Auto Trader UK
http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_search.asp

Despite having lots of vehicles in its database (although knowing how many is difficult) this site doesn't score that well. It has a fairly good search tool but the results can only be manipulated in two ways. The site also seems sluggish and the display format is a bit cumbersome. The details page is by contrast quite good with a lot of helpful extras and an 'email the seller' link that will launch your email client and therefore allows you to control how much information about yourself you divulge.

Pros:
There seem to be lots of vehicles in the database and the all important 'search by distance from postcode' feature is present. The details page is good with a glossary of terms, insurance quote link etc and, as mentioned above, an email link to the seller (if a private seller).

Cons:
The display format is a bit cumbersome and can only be re-sorted by price and distance from your postcode - more options for re-sorting would be helpful. Although the detail page is excellent in terms of extras it is a bit skimpy in terms of the level of information available about the vehicle itself. Also, on trade listings you will have to either telephone the dealership or go to their website and look for a method to get more information.

How to:

  • Search for a used vehicle
Click on the More options tab to see some additional search criteria, Input your search criteria and click on the red Search button.

  • Request more information from seller/dealer
Once you've got a list of vehicles displayed (see above) click on the name of the vehicle to see the details page. Once on the details page click on the email seller link (if there is one - some private sellers may only list a telephone number). Vehicles for sale by dealers may not have a link and you'll have to go their website to figure out how to get more information on the vehicle.

CarHunt.co.uk - Used Cars
http://www.CarHunt.co.uk/buy-used-cars/

This site has about 1,600 vehicles in the database and a search tool that is only adequate. The results display format is cumbersome and the results can not be manipulated in any way. Results on individual vehicles are okay and it seems as if every ad has an email seller button that launches your email client and thus gives you full control over how much information you divulge.

Pros:
The search tool is basic but does include a field for your postcode although you can not specify a distance within the postcode to search. The results displayed do show the distance from your postcode of individual vehicles. The amount of information on the vehicle details page is good and since the site seems only to contain private ads that allow you to email the seller directly you are able to control how much information you divulge.

Cons:
It is unfortunate that results can not be re-sorted - it seems as if they are displayed in ascending distance from your postcode which is fine but what if you wanted to sort them some other way - for example by price? There also aren't a lot of vehicles in the database.

How to:

  • Search for a used vehicle
Specify your search criteria (including your postcode) and click on the Go button.

  • Request more information from seller/dealer
Once you've got a list of vehicles displayed (see above) click on the more details link to see more information about a specific vehicle. On the details page you can either telephone the seller or click on the 'E-Mail the Seller' link - the latter will launch your email client and you can email the seller directly without having to divulge your phone number or address.

Preloved - The Motoring Channel
http://www.preloved.co.uk/go/motoring/

Another site with lots of vehicles that is crippled by a pathetic search tool (well actually no search tool would be a more accurate description). The results display format is inefficient and results can not be manipulated in any way. Responding to ads is no longer hassle-free (see below for more details).

Pros:
About the only positive thing to say about this site is that it has lots of vehicles in the database.

Cons:
The so-called 'advanced search' allows you to specify a keyword, region to search with in, price range and manufacturer. No ability to search by distance from postcode, no way to choose a model (other than typing it in the keyword field) and no way to sort results (either before or after display). The amount of detail about the vehicle varies widely as it is input by the seller without any rules imposed by the site - so there can be long rambling descriptions or short, concise ones. Finally, you'll have to register to respond to any ads - this means you have to supply a minimal amount of information on a non-secure form. It is not that I am so concerned about security here, more that it is a nuisance to have to do this right in the middle of looking at ads.

How to:

  • Search for a used vehicle
On the main page select the manufacturer you are looking for. On the next page click on the Advanced Search link - this will allow you to specify a keyword, region and price range. Click on update search when you're done.

  • Request more information from seller/dealer
Once you've got a list of vehicles displayed (see above) click on the view details link. Then click on the 'Click Here to Respond to this advert' link - you'll need to register if you haven't already done so to be able to send your request for more information to the seller.
